There are a few of key concepts that should be clarified before one keeps on reading this blog. First there is ludology, this concepts importance is mostly because it is the framework by which we shall be working. Although it is Frasca’s (2003) definition which will be used in this site. This definition claims ludology as a field which does not deny or exclude narratives in games, but it does give a major importance to the mechanics of it.
On the other hand there a set of rules presented in Chee Siang Ang’s (2006) article. First we must understand that the set of rules presented is intended to unite both gameplay or mechanics and narrative or storyline by exposing two categories for rules; paidea rules, established to play the game and ludus rules, established to win a game. Furthermore in these two rules we can find a subset of rules. Two kind of paidea rules can be found: the symbolic paidea rules are the ones which say what a player can and cannot do in the video game; on the other hand there is the semantic paidea rules, these rules define the consequences that certain actions can have. In the same way ludus rules are subdivided into extrinsic ludus rules and intrinsic ludus rules; respectively these rules are what contributes directly or indirectly to winning a game. Finally both set of rules (paidea and ludus) are related towards narrative in different ways, paidea rules can relate to the narrative settings or spatiality, in other words, there are certain actions which are determined among where the player is in what could be called the virtual space. On the other hand ludus rules are related with the narrative plot or fabula, this is to say that according to what is happening in the game the player will make one or other choice depending on the context he might be encountered to.
